There is so much to love about this book! It is a nostalgic narrative for those who are old enough to remember butchering their own meat, raising their own food, and the habitual moves of sharecroppers and their families as they eked out a living during the years of the country's Great Depression.

I had done considerable research on this era while writing my own book, and "Sharecropping in North Louisiana" opened up a new understanding to me of the different ways in which people in different parts of our country survived those harsh years. It gave me a comprehensive view of the times and is written so warmly that it feels like your own grandmother is telling the story.

I would recommend this book to any audience, young, old, or in-between.

"Sharecropping in North Louisiana" is a living history book written by Lillian Laird Duff and her daughter, Linda Duff Niemeir. This story begins to unfold at the turn of the 20th century with some history in the first chapter concerning Mrs. Duff's grandparents. It chronicles suffering, laughter, trials, and triumphs along the way as Mrs. Duff grows up.

Lillian Duff's father was a sharecropper. I had no idea of the particular trials faced by people in the years from the Depression through World War II, but "Sharecropping in Louisiana" allowed me to reflect upon American History in a fresh and vibrant way which furthered my appreciation for our ancestors in this country. As the reader, I can appreciate God's provision even in the most difficult times to watch the unfolding of this story.

I appreciate Linda Niemeir's storytelling flair. She penned this volume as she discussed the history with her mother. I recommend "Sharecropping in North Louisiana" for everyone from about the fifth grade reading level on up. I value this book as a home schooling mother. My children have enjoyed it and learned to respect the lives of their grandparents and parents by reading this book.
Linda Niemeir's book, Sharecropping in North Louisiana, A Family's Struggle Through The Great Depression, is a slice of life in the history of our country. The family story here is much like the family story of my mother and dad. My mother's family were sharecroppers in Oklahoma in the same era. Many of the stories were similar.

Because I was born later in my parents' lives, I missed a lot of the things of life that my brothers and sisters experienced first hand. This book details some of the hardships and practical work that families did in those days. Things like butchering a hog, deciding what crops to plant for survival, grocery lists (which were only a hand full of staples), and other basics of living simply.

We all want to simplify our lives, but do we even think of what this means? There would be no air conditioning, no electricity, no frills at all. My hat is off to those who lived through these times. Mrs. Niemeir and her mother, Mrs. Duff did a great job in writing this book. They made the history of their family interesting as well as informative. I plan to use it as reference for books that I write in the future. This window into live in the Depression era is one that many of us need to peer through. I recommend that you get a copy of this and read it. You will appreciate modern life and the people who came before you.

It also provides a rich, detailed account of the social and cultural mores of that time and place

I bought this book for research purposes, as I am deep into writing a novel in which main characters are sharecroppers from that era. In searching for source material, I found many books and memoirs relating the lives and experiences of African-American sharecropper children, but few detailing the experiences of white sharecropper families. This book exceeded my expectations. I found it to be a treasure of accurate information regarding everyday sharecropper life in during the Depression years, as well as providing insights into some of the psychological and emotional results of living that life.

The first-person narrator's depiction of her family's church affiliation and depth of faith is another critical revelation. Churches in the "bible belt" at that time often anchored communities and served as a common denominator among people.

As a former history teacher, I believe Sharecropping in North Louisiana would be a valuable addition to any U.S. History and/or Louisiana History curriculum. It is well written, with an easily comprehensible reading level, and provides insight and information not readily available from other sources. It brings history to life ... and, it's a good read.
