Annie Special Day Clara BowmanJahn Claudia Wolf 9781937809218 Books Reviews
I received this as an ARC.
Annie's Special Day is a colorful story about how Annie celebrates her birthday. She is going to have a sleepover that night and in typical little kid fashion, she is counting the hours until it is time for her party. Each page has wonderfully bright and colorful drawings depicting the hour's adventure. The words in the story also say what time it is and a clock can be found on every page. This story is designed to help you teach your kids how to tell time (hours only). I can see this story leading to helping kids identify different types of clocks and how to "find hidden objects" as well.

Writing a review for a kids book is difficult because each child is different. What one likes another might detest. So here's what I can say...
When the book came, I let my son open the package! He was excited for a new book. We're a big book family. We read it at bed time. He loved helping me read the different clocks and asked lots of questions- a clear sign he was interested.
My son is about to turn 5 and although I had got him a watch before, he wasn't that interested in figuring out time- until we read the book. Now he's working harder on figuring out times. I'd say that is a good book then! 0)
*I received this book in exchange for an honest review*
This was a cute story teaching a child to tell time, but the errors in this short children's book quickly overshadowed that. One sentence says, "The DVD clcockshowed...." Seriously? "Clclock?" Even spell check would have caught that. The illustrations kept my daughter's attention, but one incorrectly shows 13+12=15. Did no one edit this book?!
I just wanted to say that our little 4-year-old Michael is finally old enough to be curious about how adults measure the passing hours and he adores "Annie's Special Day!" It's a wonderful introduction to the concept of the 24 hour day. Details like the clock on the microwave as they make popcorn and the clock over the piano and the kitchen clock as they eat breakfast pancakes remind him of his own home. I will highly recommend this to parents introducing their kids to time! I took off a star because in the classroom the blackboard shows 13+12=15
Annie's Special Day is a colorful picture book about a young girl's birthday. Most pages of the book represent an hour of her day, moving from her waking up in the morning at 700 till she falls asleep 24 hours later. The day includes her time at school, supper with her family and then a sleep-over party.
In each page a clock shows the time. Some of the clocks are analogue and some of them are digital, and I like that the book included a variety of types of clocks including the one on a cell phone and on the kitchen stove. After reading the book we discussed the different types of clocks and where we find clocks around our own house, including the clocks on our electric thermostats and computers. The hanging wall clock is a rarity in our lives, so I like that it is featured just as one of many types of clocks around.
At the same time I think it important that the book does include analogue clocks, and I think that learning to read an analogue clock is important not because I think my children will very frequently have to read them but because learning to read them helps reinforce the skills of counting by fives, understanding angles and fractions of a circle.
I received a free e-copy of this book in exchange for writing a blogpost about the book. I'm posting here because I want to encourage the author on her pursuit and I look forward to future books from her. Perhaps a book about temperature? Or seasons?
Young children love celebrations..and "Annie's Special Day" is an hour-by-hour accounting of the wonderful things that happen on Annie's birthday. As a former kindergarten teacher and mom of three, I know how important it is for kids to learn how to tell time! How much time do I have until I have to go to bed? Is it time to read a story yet? With this book, children will enjoy following Annie for the twenty-four hours of her special day. The illustrations are bright and bold and add to the happy tone of the story.
I plan to use this book in my school visit program...I know the kindergarten classes will love it...we do a craft project after the story reading...and I know just the thing...each child will make their own clock out of construction paper, using a metal paper fastener so the hands can turn. What fun!

Bought this for my 6-year-old granddaughter. She already knew the hour on each page, but she had a great time reading them to ME. Now I'm going to read it to my 4-year-old. Sweet story and illustrations.
I love the story and the time-telling aspect. Whenever we can make a life skill fun to learn it's good. Annie is an adorable heroine. The story is sweet and endearing and so realistic. I highly recommend it.
