I can’t believe how expensive this is! The typist must be the laziest bum. There’s a total lack of paragraph indicators. What does it really take to hit enter twice or tab? You probably saved a nanosecond of time. And the little typos are very distracting. The most common seems to be “and,” which is written “adn.” Which brings up something else, because my phone just tried to fix adn THREE times before I convinced it I really wanted to write that. As such, this person must have worked hard to do such a poor job. I would advise finding a different printing of this so that you can actually enjoy the story, which seems good fro what I can tell.Product details

The Bride of Lammermoor Walter Sir Scott 9781374950009 Books Reviews
Sir Walter Scott was once considered the equal of Shakespeare by some. His influence on 19th century literature was immense. What's more, he still offers good reading. You might not know it from the typical undergraduate British literature survey text, though, where he is likely to be neglected in favor of writers more fashionable today.
I had to read Scott on my own -- fired by the enthusiasm of C. S. Lewis, whose essay on Scott in SELECTED LITERARY ESSAYS is warmly recommended. The first one I read, Kenilworth, wasn't all that good. Better were The Antiquary, Redgauntlet, Rob Roy, The Heart of Midlothian, and Waverley. This novel, The Bride of Lammermoor, is a good one to start with -- being not as long as many of his masterpieces. I suggest the first-time reader skip to the second chapter and start there. Be independent! Find out for yourself why your great-great-great grandparents loved this guy. If you like a warm-hearted storyteller, you should look into Sir Walter.
The Bride of Lammermoor, is what it is, and the 3 star rating is not directed at his work.
The 3 stars are due to the somewhat odd dimensions of the book (6"x9") which would be forgivable if it weren't for the teeny tiny font of the text, particularly in relation to the wide empty margins.
Good book, good price, acceptable dimensions, ridiculous type font.
I had never read the original book from which the opera Lucia di Lammermoore was derived. I read it to find out the differences and I found them. Sir Walter Scott is excellent, but so is Donizetti
3.5 stars
This is a must read for fans of the genre....a classic gothic romance!
This Gothic tale has it all....witches, women going mad, a family fallen from grace, degenerative castles, ruined fortunes, Byronic heros, star crossed lovers, a dark prophecy, ominous symbology...everything! It is MacBeth, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Wuthering Heights all rolled into one.
When I was 14 I was abed with hepatitis and spent much time listening to the radio, where I heard Patrice Munsel in Donizetti's opera Lucia di Laammermoor. A very few years later, changing trains in Cleveland as I traveled home from school on the West coast, I saw in the station's theatre an Italian movie of the opera performed in realistic scenery (with real horses in the outdoor scenes). Consequently, I knew the story when I began to read, but the actual novel devekops the tale more fully, completing the story of the love between the dispossessed heir of a fallen great family and the daughter of the family whose rise profited from his loss. One cannot help hoping for the success of the lovers, blocked at every turn by the hatred of the girl's mother for the rival family injured by her husband's legal craft. The fatal denouement, Scott asserts to have been inspired by an actual event in which a bride stabs her "bonny bridegroom," not fatally, but nearly so, as he comes to the bridal chamber. I could not leave off reading. Five stars, and more if possible.
I chose this book after reading a reference to it in Elizabeth Gaskell's "Wives and Daughters". I was hooked early on, the side characters were surprisingly drawn, and I enjoyed the ShakespearIan style and the Scottish history. I found myself laughing outloud throughout several scenes, the comedy was also a big surprise. Not as Gothic as I expected, but rather an authentic period piece. Will read more Scott thanks to this.
Of course I made some research about the book. I found out, that Walter Scott did not correct errors and so it was published with all the errors in. Away from that, I know the story, but was curious about the book! I was not to impressed about the extended, stiff and complicated writing style of that time! Long sentences often leading to nowhere. But I understood a few things more! For example why the Lamm ermine bride attacked her forced upon fiancee! Her mental state was always just doing what everyone asked of her! Her father favorite, but her mother and older brother found her weak! It's sure worth trying to read it !
