This is a wonderful book. It is more than a simple self-help book (or “us-help book” as the author puts it) with some inspirational stories. It certainly does have inspiring tales about some incredible people who faced severe problems (the kind I hope never to experience personally). However, it really is for anyone who simply wants more loving kindness in their life. In short, the book lays out a simple set of steps that you can follow to a life that is better for you and everyone you come in contact with. Some steps are easier than others and some take a fair amount of effort. However, even if you do not follow the entire set of steps and suggestions, start down this road and before you finish the book you are most likely to find yourself smiling more, and being smiled at.The central idea is that mindful kindness, or being “kindful”, has truly transformative power. Be kind to yourself, and be kind to others. As the author explains, being kind to other people (but not being a doormat who lets himself or herself get used) will make you feel better. Learning to identify your unkind habits is a start. It is likely to lead you to realize that those habits aren’t making anyone happier. The value of going beyond those habits is illustrated by stories of real people who have done this, with practical real-world activities you can adopt that will lead you to a happier life. You don’t need to buy anything, go anywhere, or change jobs. This is about taking a thoughtfully kinder approach to everyone, very much including yourself. (You may be surprised at how the author exposes the unkindnesses you do to yourself.)
For those who care about scientific evidence, the author provides numerous references of peer-reviewed studies published in respected journals. There is a lot of evidence that these practices can lead to positive feelings and a happier life. For many of us, the stories on how someone who is dying, or someone surviving in a notorious maximum security prison has changed their own lives by living kindfully are more than enough to convince us. The book also has some simple (and very revealing) anecdotes about the author’s own life (as a very successful professor, author, husband and father) and how he learned the value of what he now offers in this book, thus transforming his own life. I had already started practicing some of what the author suggests before reading it. What this book teaches has greatly changed my life for the better. (And my wife would say it has improved hers as well.)

How Love Wins The Power of Mindful Kindness Doug Carnine 9780998050928 Books Reviews
We're taught from a young age to "be kind." It's the mantra in kindergartens everywhere, and yet as adults we fail to remember, or learn how to keep, the action of kindness in our daily lives. For many people, being kind, upbeat, happy and positive seems totally natural and effortless. But for most of us, it's something that takes conscious effort and daily practice to not only remember how to do it but make it be the first response we have.
This book teaches you not only how to do this, but why. Through the practices and inspiring stories and examples in this book you will learn to keep your thoughts in the present moment. Act with purpose and intention. Ignore the negative, judgmental thoughts that invade our minds. And in general, increase your capacity for kindness no matter what happens. It's not just responding with kindness even when we're feeling impatient. Examples of unkind habits are explosive anger, distractedness that leads to harm or injury (texting while driving), being greedy and selfish, gossiping, or any activity that we regularly engage in that is not only thoughtless but causes harm to others.
The author's background is in Buddhism and those lessons are used as a powerful basis for the foundation of mindfulness in our actions. But this is not a religious book and no matter what your belief system is you'll enjoy something about the book. If you're open to the scientific research that backs up the fact that acting in kindness helps you live a happier life, and you're ready to start bringing some of that into your own life, this book wll show you how.
I have only known Dough Carnine through his very important education research and books in education. This book addresses a different topic, but clearly the format of the book, which involves lots of applied activities, was influenced by his knowledge of effective instruction. In short, it is a great book. It addresses many things, one of which is negative mind wandering which most of us engage in. I have found the exercises to be very helpful in increasing my mindful kindness and decreasing covert and overt negative behavior.
